China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales declined significantly in February from January due to the disruption caused by the New Year holiday.

Retail sales of passenger NEVs in China totaled 401,000 units in February, down 9 percent from a year earlier and down 41 percent from January, according to preliminary data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Cumulative retail sales of China's passenger NEVs so far this year were 1.069 million units, up 39 percent from the same period last year.

This year's Chinese New Year holiday was February 10-17, impacting both vehicle production and sales. Last year, the holiday fell on January 21-27.

Wholesale sales of Chinese passenger NEVs in February were 441,000 units, down 11 percent from a year ago and down 37 percent from January, according to the CPCA.

Cumulative wholesale sales of Chinese passenger NEVs so far this year totaled 1.123 million units, up 27 percent year-on-year.

In February, China's retail sales of all passenger vehicles amounted to 1.092 million units, down 21 percent year-on-year and down 47 percent from January.

This means that in February, China's NEV retail penetration rate was 36.72 percent.

So far this year, China's retail sales of all passenger vehicles were 3.126 million units, up 17 percent year-on-year.

In the first week of February -- February 1-4 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 54,289, up 48 percent year-on-year and up 1 percent from the same period in January.

In the second and third weeks of February -- February 5-17, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 25,576, down 34 percent year-on-year and down 56 percent from the same period in January.

In the fourth week of February -- February 18-25 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 38,862, down 39 percent year-on-year and down 41percent from the same period in January.

In the fifth week of February -- February 26-29 -- average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 57,845, up 6 percent year-on-year while 37 percent lower than in the same period in January.

In February, China's wholesale sales of all passenger cars were 1.256 million units, down 22 percent from a year earlier and 40 percent from January, the CPCA said.

Cumulative wholesale sales of all passenger cars in China so far this year totaled 3.344 million units, up 9 percent from a year earlier.

From February 1-4, China's average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars were 30,220 units, up 8 percent from a year earlier but 36 percent lower than the same period in January.

For February 5-17, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 19,545 units, down 53 percent from a year ago and down 64 percent from January. The figure was revised up slightly from the 19,456 units reported last week.

During February 18-25, China's average daily passenger car wholesale sales were 40,975 units, 51 percent below the same period last year and 33 percent below the same period last month. The figure was revised down slightly from 41,119 units reported last week.

During February 16-29, average daily wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 138,299, up 91 percent from a year earlier and up 18 percent from a month earlier.
