Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has released official images of its first electric vehicle (EV) model, 2 hours before the start of its first major launch event since announcing its car-making plans.

Xiaomi's car-making arm, Xiaomi EV, today shared nine images of the Xiaomi SU7 on Weibo, showing the model's exterior details from different angles.

These images show a blue Xiaomi SU7. No further details were released by Xiaomi EV's Weibo.

Xiaomi EV will hold a tech launch event starting at 2 pm Beijing Time today, which Xiaomi chairman and CEO Lei Jun previously said would be technology-related only, not products.

Unlike smartphone launches that usually have only one launch event, many car companies typically hold several launches of a new model before it officially goes on sale in order to gain continued buzz.

On December 26, Lei said the Xiaomi SU7 was in trial production and would hit the domestic market in a few months.

The SU in the model's name stands for Speed Ultra, meaning it will be a performance beast, Lei said on December 26.

The Xiaomi SU7 is not designed to chase any particular competitor, Lei said, adding that inspired by extensive user research, the company designed the SU7 to fulfill the different desires of its customers.

The Xiaomi SU7 is a mid-to-large-sized sedan with length, width and height of 4,997 mm, 1,963 mm, 1,440/1,455 mm and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, according to a previous regulatory filing.

The model will be offered with a choice of battery packs in 73.6 kWh and 101 kWh capacities, with a CLTC range of up to 800 kilometers.

Xiaomi has high hopes for its first model, with Lei saying in an interview with CCTV earlier this month that he is coming into the car-making venture with the aim to win.
