The number of public charging piles in China continues to grow and is approaching 2.3 million.

About 61,000 public charging piles were added in China in August, bringing the total to 2.27 million, according to data released yesterday by the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance (EVCIPA).

This includes 963,000 DC charging piles and 1.307 million AC charging piles.

From September 2022 to August 2023, the average number of newly added public charging piles in China was 54,000 per month.

The top 10 cities with the highest number of public charging piles -- Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Hubei, Beijing, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, and Fujian -- have 71.2 percent of the facilities.

Guangdong in southern China has the most, with 503,000 units, while Jiangsu is second with 168,000 units. Zhejiang was third with 167,000 units and Shanghai was fourth with 148,000 units.

In August, China's public charging piles provided about 3.26 billion kWh of electricity, up 39.8 percent year-on-year and essentially unchanged from July.

The most charged vehicles were buses and passenger cars, with other types of vehicles such as sanitation and logistics vehicles and cabs accounting for a smaller share.

Teld is the operator with the largest number of public charging piles, with 451,000 units as of August. Star Charge is in second place with 408,000 units, YKC Charging is in third place with 379,000 units, and State Grid is in fourth place with 196,000 units.

From January to August, China's charging infrastructure increased by 2 million units, of which 474,000 were public charging piles and 1.524 million were private charging piles.

As of August, the cumulative number of charging infrastructure in China stood at 7.208 million units, an increase of 67 percent from the same period last year.

From January to August, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales amounted to 5.37 million units, which is 2.7 times the number of new charging infrastructure.

The construction of charging infrastructure can basically meet the rapid development of NEVs, the EVCIPA said.
