BYD's first showroom in Tokyo, Japan, will open on August 26, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker said yesterday.

The showroom is located in the Toshima Ward, 2 kilometers from Ikebukuro Station and a five-minute walk from Senkawa Station on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin and Yurakucho lines.

The showroom features BYD's global model Atto 3, while the BYD Dolphin and Seal models are also expected to go on sale in Japan within this year.

The Atto 3, known as the Yuan Plus in China, is BYD's first model to be built for the global market, and has already been launched in a number of markets, including Europe, Australia and Singapore.

The vehicle, the first SUV of BYD's all-electric e-Platform 3.0, went on sale in China on February 19, 2022.

On July 21, 2022, BYD announced its official entry into the passenger car market in Japan with the introduction of the BYD Seal, Dolphin, and Atto 3, three battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), to local customers.

The Atto 3 was launched in Japan in January, with the other two models yet to start being offered locally.

Together with its dealers and partners in Japan, BYD will gradually build up a comprehensive sales and service system, opening a new chapter in the internationalization of passenger cars, the company said previously.

In February, BYD opened its first showroom in Japan in Yokohama, and it has 10 showrooms in the country so far, the company said, adding that it plans to open more than 100 showrooms in Japan by the end of 2025.

BYD will sell cars in Japan through a network of dealers rather than directly operated stores, as the former is the most familiar way for Japanese consumers, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific auto sales division Liu Xueliang, said in an August 2022 interview with Kyodo News.

BYD sold a record 262,161 NEVs in July, bringing its January-July total to more than 1.5 million units, half of its target for the year, according to data it released earlier this month.

In July, BYD sold 18,169 NEVs in overseas markets, up 72.45 percent from 10,536 in June.
