Nio has the most battery swap stations, supercharging stations, and destination charging stations in Shanghai, where it has its global headquarters.
The latest question received by CnEVPost's Factbox section is how many battery swap stations and charging stations does Nio (NYSE: NIO) have in each of China's major cities? This article aims to answer that question.
As of July 28, Nio had 1,591 battery swap stations, 1,535 supercharging stations and 1,317 destination charging stations in China. Its charging map also has access to 763,449 third-party charging piles.
To find out how many of these facilities are in China's major cities, the first question we need to answer is: which are China's largest cities?
According to China's State Council's criteria, cities with an urban population of 10 million or more are considered super-large cities, and those with more than 5 million and less than 10 million are considered mega cities.
According to the latest annual data from China's national statistics website, as of the end of 2021, there are eight cities in China with an urban population of more than 10 million. They are:
Shanghai 24.89 million; Beijing 19.16 million; Shenzhen 17.68 million; Chongqing 13.23 million; Guangzhou 13.20 million; Chengdu 11.87 million; Tianjin 11.65 million; Wuhan 10.94 million.
There are 11 cities with populations between 5 and 10 million:
Hangzhou 9.93 million; Dongguan 9.30 million; Xi'an 7.40 million; Zhengzhou 7.19 million; Nanjing 6.93 million; Jinan 6.57 million; Hefei 6.42 million; Shenyang 5.97 million; Qingdao 5.80 million; Changsha 5.10 million; Harbin 5.03 million.
It is worth noting that Chongqing is China's largest city when the total population, not just urban population, is included, with a total population of 30.79 million at the end of 2021.
Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of urban population, with a population of 24.89 million at the end of 2021.
In addition to being the city with the largest urban population in China, Shanghai is also home to Nio's global headquarters and one of the most EV-friendly cities in China.
As a result, Shanghai has the largest number of Nio battery swap stations, supercharging stations, and destination charging stations.
As of July 28, Nio had 120 battery swap stations in Shanghai, followed by 86 in Beijing and 51 in Hangzhou.
Shenyang and Harbin, two northeastern Chinese cities, have the fewest Nio battery swap stations, with seven and six respectively.
Northeast China's cold winter climate is considered unsuitable for EV adoption.
As of July 28, Nio had 136 supercharging stations in Shanghai, followed by 65 in Beijing and 32 in Hangzhou.
Of these most populous cities, Hefei and Jinan have the fewest Nio supercharging stations, with eight and seven, respectively.
Nio has 85 destination charging stations in Shanghai, followed by 53 in Beijing and 44 in Shenzhen.
The company does not have any destination charging stations in Shenyang and has only six destination charging stations in Jinan.
