Changan Automobile's new energy vehicle (NEV) brand Shenlan seems determined to compete with Tesla's models in China.

Shenlan officially had its first SUV, the Shenlan S7, a model similar to the Tesla Model Y crossover, unveiled in Shanghai on March 5.

The brand's first model, the Shenlan SL03 sedan, which went on sale last July, is a strong competitor to the Model 3 and has already had initial success.

The Shenlan S7 is Shenlan's second model, and like the SL03 is based on Changan's EPA1 platform.

The midsize SUV measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width and 1,625 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

The Shenlan S7 will be available in two power versions, including a battery electric vehicle (BEV) version and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version similar to (NASDAQ: LI).

The Shenlan S7 BEV will be powered by either a 160 kW or 190 kW electric motor, its EREV model will have a motor with a peak power of 175 kW, and the range extender will be a 1.5 L displacement engine with a maximum power of 70 kW.

Shenlan, Changan's NEV brand launched in 2022, officially launched the Shenlan SL03 electric sedan on July 25, another strong competitor to the Model 3.

Unlike the Tesla Model 3, the Shenlan SL03 is available in three power variants -- an electric-only version, an extended-range version and a version with hydrogen fuel cells.

The Shenlan SL03 BEV currently starts at RMB 189,900 ($27,490), lower than the Model 3's starting price of RMB 229,900 in China. The SL03 EREV has a starting price of RMB 171,900.

Shenlan has not released price information for the S7, but it is expected to have a lower starting price than the Model Y's RMB 261,900 in China.

Shenlan began deliveries of the SL03 at the end of August 2022, with a total of 37,328 units delivered by the end of February this year, including 4,103 units in February, it said earlier this month.
