Beijing is the latest of many Chinese cities to mention support for the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry in their new five-year plans, amid rapid growth in the sector.
An energy development plan for the 14th five-year planning period (2021-2025) released today by the Beijing municipal government mentions that the city will develop a program to promote NEVs and vigorously promote the replacement of fuel motor vehicles with electric vehicles.
Beijing aims to reach 2 million NEVs by 2025, according to the plan. As a comparison, at the end of 2020, Beijing's NEV ownership was 400,000.
Except for special cases such as emergency vehicles and those for and major events, vehicles in public sectors such as public transportation, rental, sanitation and postal services will be basically electrified by 2025, according to the plan.
Beijing will also develop incentive policies to encourage consumers to replace fuel vehicles with electric ones.
The plan also mentions that the city will make every effort to promote the construction of charging and battery swap infrastructure.
By 2025, Beijing will have built a total of 700,000 charging piles, and the average service radius of public charging facilities in the plains will be less than 3 kilometers, according to the plan.
Beijing will also carry out pilot work on the application of battery swap mode for NEVs, the plan mentions, without revealing more details.
In the past five years, Beijing has built 230,000 charging piles and 159 battery swap stations, and the average charging service radius of public piles was less than 5 km in plain areas and less than 0.9 km in key areas, according to the plan.
