BYD on Monday unveiled a new brand proposition for its automotive business: Technology, Green, Future, in a bid to upgrade its image among consumers.

The new brand proposition reflects BYD's relentless pursuit of a sustainable future for humanity, according to China's largest maker of new energy vehicles (NEVs).

"Technology" represents BYD's mission to meet people's aspirations for a better life with technological innovation, the company said, adding that it is firmly committed to its strategy of popularizing new energy technologies to drive global sustainable development.

"Green" represents BYD's green dream, and the company will continue to promote the development and application of green and low-carbon technologies.

BYD will take China's carbon-neutral goal as its responsibility, actively respond to global climate change and promote the transformation of society's energy consumption structure, it said.

By December 2021, BYD have sold more than 1.5 million NEVs and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 8.92 million tons, equivalent to planting 750 million trees, it said.

"Future" represents the bright future of BYD's automotive business and the dreams and hopes of mankind for a better future, the company said.

As a global leader in the NEV industry, BYD is committed to building a zero-emission new energy ecosystem and a sustainable electrified future, it said.

For the full year of 2021, BYD's NEV sales were 603,783 units, up 218.3 percent from 2020, according to figures released by the company early last month.

In 2021, BYD's new energy passenger vehicle sales were 593,745 units, up 231.6 percent from a year earlier, while commercial vehicles will be 10,038 units, down 5.6 percent from a year earlier.

BYD said in an investor conference call last December that its 2022 NEV sales target is roughly between 1.1-1.2 million units, with 600,000 BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and 500,000-600,000 PHEVs (plug-in hybrids), according to a report in the Shenzhen Economic Daily.

The industry's current forecast for China's NEV sales next year is roughly 4.5-5 million units, and if BYD achieves its goal of 1.2 million sales, it would mean an increase in its market share to about 25 percent, the report said.

If BYD reaches the goal, it would become the second company in the world after to sell more than 1 million NEVs a year, even though all of Tesla's models are BEVs.
