DJI is a world-renowned innovator in the drone market. Now the company is looking to bring its innovative capabilities to China's increasingly hot smart car market.

DJI announced Monday that it is launching a new brand, DJI Automotive (大疆车载), and that the company will showcase the brand's technological innovations at the Shanghai Auto Show starting April 19.

DJI said its new brand is dedicated to serving the mobility market with space intelligence technology, focusing on the development, production, and sales of intelligent driving systems and their core components.

Under the brand, DJI will provide customers with different levels of pre-installed technology for autonomous driving functions, including hardware solutions, software solutions and hardware and software packaged solutions.

According to yicai.com, DJI has been in the auto parts business for five years. The team for the new brand is not recently established and currently has more than 700 people.

DJI has also been hiring automotive electronics, autonomous driving, and in-vehicle software engineers over the past years, and plans to sell driver assistance technologies such as LIDAR sensors, as well as autonomous driving features.

On Jan. 1, Xpeng Motors announced a partnership with DJI-incubated Livox to use the production of its custom vehicle-grade LiDAR in a new production model to be launched in 2021.

Founded in 2016, the Livox team is a company incubated internally by DJI and later operated independently, focusing on the development and productization of cost-effective LiDAR technology solutions for mass production.
