Xpeng has started pre-sales of its new flagship SUV model, the GX, with the new car's pre-sales price set at 399,800 yuan ($58,620).
The GX becomes Xpeng's highest-priced model to date, marking the Chinese EV maker's latest foray into the premium luxury market.
Xpeng said at a technology launch event for the GX on Wednesday that showroom cars nationwide will start arriving at stores from April 18.
The Xpeng GX is a full-size luxury large six-seat SUV model, coming standard with a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system across the lineup.
It offers both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain options, continuing the dual-powertrain strategy Xpeng has executed over the past year aimed at easing range anxiety.
The model is built on Xpeng's new SEPA 3.0 (Smart Electric Platform Architecture 3.0) and is positioned as a robotaxi prototype built entirely to L4 autonomous driving standards.
The car adopts a pure-vision autonomous driving solution and is not equipped with LiDAR. Xpeng was among the first Chinese automakers to start using LiDAR, but has since abandoned the sensor.
The Xpeng GX is equipped with three of the company's in-house developed Turing AI driving chips, featuring 2,250 TOPS of effective computing power, and supports advanced Vision-Language-Action (VLA) large language AI models.
Safety is another major selling point of the new model. The GX adopts an aviation-grade six-fold safety redundancy design, including backups for key systems such as steering and braking, according to the company.
Its BEV version is built on an 800-volt high-voltage silicon carbide platform and supports 5C supercharging technology. This variant is equipped with a 110-kWh battery pack, offering a CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) range of up to 750 kilometers.
The EREV version is equipped with a 63.3-kWh battery pack, has a battery range of 430 kilometers, and boasts a comprehensive range of over 1,585 kilometers on a full tank and full charge.
The Xpeng GX will compete fiercely with local peers in China's crowded premium SUV market.
Its direct competitors include the Nio ES8, Li Auto's Li L9 and Li L8, and the Huawei-backed Aito brand's M8.
The GX model is crucial for Xpeng to further explore the premium market with higher gross margins. Currently, the company's sales are primarily driven by the budget electric sedan Mona M03.
