BYD is reportedly aiming a higher overseas sales goal of 1.5 million vehicles for 2026, as its international business helps hedge against domestic weakness.

During an analyst briefing on Monday, BYD management indicated the company is confident in achieving 1.5 million exports in 2026, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The new figure is 15% higher than the overseas sales target BYD announced earlier this year.

The Shenzhen-based new energy vehicle (NEV) maker said in January that its 2026 export target was 1.3 million vehicles, representing a year-on-year growth of about 24%.

Citi said in a November 2025 research note, citing BYD management, that the company's overseas sales guidance for 2026 was 1.5 million to 1.6 million vehicles.

BYD exported 1,046,083 NEVs for the full year of 2025, including passenger and commercial vehicles, achieving a 150.74% year-on-year growth.

The company's overseas sales structure maintained a highly balanced distribution across different regions, with Europe, North America, and ASEAN each accounting for about one-third of its total overseas sales in 2025.

BYD's total NEV sales for the full year of 2025 came in at 4,602,436 units, of which passenger battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales hit a record 2,256,714 units.

This robust sales figure enabled BYD to surpass its main rival Tesla in the BEV sector for the first time, as the latter recorded global sales of 1,636,129 vehicles during the same period.

BYD's full-year net profit for 2025 fell 19% year-on-year to 32.62 billion yuan ($4.72 billion).
