CALB has started mass production of aviation batteries for Aridge, paving the way for the Xpeng flying car unit to begin mass production of its eVTOL (Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) vehicles later this year.

CALB said in a statement on Wednesday that the aviation-grade power batteries it supplies for Aridge's flying cars have officially rolled off the production line at its Chengdu plant.

The aviation-grade battery, which features high safety standards, will serve as the core power system and will be equipped on Aridge's Land Aircraft Carrier modular flying car, codenamed X3-F.

The high-silicon and high-nickel cells have an energy density of up to 360 Wh/kg and a maximum discharge rate of 25C, CALB said.

The battery did not catch fire, explode, or leak in a 15.2-meter drop test, and its thermal safety design meets aviation airworthiness requirements, the company said.

Over 100,000 cells have been cumulatively verified, meeting both automotive regulations and aviation airworthiness certifications, CALB noted.

Aridge, which originated in 2013 and was officially established in 2020, is a technology unit majority-owned by Guangzhou-based Xpeng and its chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng.

The company is actively advancing the commercialization of this modular flying car, having previously confirmed plans to achieve mass production and delivery within 2026, with an expected final market price not exceeding 2 million yuan ($290,000).

In China's fiercely competitive power battery market, CALB aims to further consolidate its market position through application innovations in such cutting-edge fields.

CALB ranked third in China's domestic power battery installations in February with a 6.00% market share, according to data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

The Chinese battery market is currently still dominated by the two giants, CATL and BYD, which held a combined market share of over 62% in February this year.

The latest funding round of nearly $200 million brings Aridge's total historical equity financing to about $1 billion.
