Chery Automobile has unveiled an all-solid-state battery with a range exceeding 1,500 kilometers, a new technology expected to debut and undergo vehicle testing on the Exeed ES8 model next year.

The auto giant announced the solid-state battery on Wednesday at the 2026 Chery Battery Night. It is part of its newly launched Rhino Battery series, coming on the heels of local rival BYD's release of its next-generation Blade Battery.

Chery's solid-state battery pilot production line has developed battery cells of various energy density levels, which are currently undergoing extensive testing, according to the company.

As the countdown to mass production begins, all-solid-state batteries have become a focal point for the industry and consumers, and Chery will place no cap on its future investments in this field, the automaker's vice president Gu Chunshan said.

The Rhino Battery S-series includes a 60 Ah, 400 Wh/kg solid-state battery that utilizes a sulfide-based solid electrolyte and high-nickel ternary cathode materials.

Another 600 Wh/kg solid-state battery adopts a polymer-based solid electrolyte and uses lithium-rich manganese cathode materials. It can deliver a range of over 1,500 kilometers, with Chery targeting vehicle testing completion in 2027.

Chery also announced a lineup of models equipped with different battery technologies. The Exeed ES sedan will feature the Rhino E liquid battery, while the Exeed EX7 five-seater SUV (sport utility vehicle) will be equipped with a semi-solid-state battery in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Rhino liquid battery supports a maximum charging power of up to 1,200 kW, enabling it to add 500 kilometers of range in just 8 minutes of charging. The battery's volume expansion rate has been reduced by 10%, and its cycle life reaches 5,000, Chery said.

Chery plans to build a network of Xunlong ultra-fast charging stations supporting V2G (vehicle-to-grid) functions. The company intends to construct 100 charging stations equipped with vehicle-grid interaction capabilities across an initial batch of 10 cities.

By 2029, Chery plans to complete over 20,000 Xunlong ultra-fast charging stations, which will utilize next-generation silicon carbide components and achieve a system efficiency greater than 96.5%.

This major technology unveil follows Chery's robust financial performance in 2025. Its net profit for 2025 jumped 34.6% year-on-year to 19.02 billion yuan ($2.77 billion), according to an earnings report released earlier today.

The strong annual bottom-line financial result was primarily driven by record deliveries. Chery achieved a total global delivery of 2,631,381 vehicles in 2025, an 8% increase.

The company's total revenue for 2025 grew by 11.3%, reaching 300.29 billion yuan.

Just 13 days prior to Chery's technology launch, BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery on March 5, which takes only 5 minutes to charge from 10% to 70%, and just 9 minutes to charge from 10% to 97%.

BYD also released flash charging facilities with power up to 1,500 kW, a 50% increase from its first-generation flash chargers launched in March 2025. It plans to build 20,000 flash charging stations in China by the end of this year.

Zhao formally announced his joining of Luxeed, the new brand jointly created by Huawei and Chery, following his departure from BYD last October.
