CATL (HKG: 3750, SHE: 300750) has commenced large-scale commercialization of its next-generation high-capacity battery cells for energy storage systems, following the product's launch in June.
The 587-Ah high-capacity cell has achieved 2 GWh in shipments, marking its official entry into mass commercialization, according to a report today by local media outlet Jiemian.
This year, shipments of the 587-Ah cell are projected to reach 3GWh, the report noted.
CATL's production facility in Jining, Shandong, supports a daily output exceeding 220,000 587-Ah high-capacity cells, according to the report.
The production line generates one cell in under two seconds on average, achieving a 42 percent reduction in production costs and a safety failure rate at the PPB level (parts per billion), the report said.
CATL launched the 587-Ah high-capacity cell on June 10, achieving an energy density of 434 Wh/L -- a 10 percent improvement over its predecessor.
The product represents the latest iteration of CATL's energy storage cells following the 280-Ah and 314-Ah products, with the company saying it underwent three years of R&D and testing.
Through iterations including the 280 Ah and 314 Ah products, CATL's globally deployed energy storage system capacity exceeds 256 GWh, the company said at its June launch event.
These products are deployed across over 1,000 energy storage projects worldwide, maintaining a zero-incident record to date, according to CATL.
CATL is the world's largest battery manufacturer, with energy storage as one of its core businesses.
In 2024, CATL's revenue reached RMB 362 billion ($51 billion), with its energy storage battery systems business contributing RMB 57.29 billion, or 15.83 percent, according to its annual report released in March.
The power battery systems business generated revenue of RMB 253.04 billion in 2024, accounting for 69.90 percent of total revenue.
