BMW is recalling thousands of electric vehicles (EVs) in China due to a software issue that could cause vehicles to lose power.

The German luxury automaker is recalling a total of 7,740 EVs in China, with some recalls beginning immediately and others starting in January next year, according to an announcement on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

BMW is recalling 17 imported i7 vehicles produced between December 12, 2022, and November 30, 2023, and 85 imported iX vehicles produced between March 10, 2023, and December 18, 2023, effective immediately.

It is also recalling 917 domestically produced i5 vehicles manufactured between April 15, 2024, and December 18, 2024, and 1,707 domestically produced iX1 vehicles manufactured between April 11, 2024, and May 17, 2025, effective immediately.

The company will recall 5,014 domestically produced i3 vehicles manufactured between April 20, 2024, and January 4, 2025, starting January 26, 2026.

Vehicles subject to this recall may experience erroneous shutdowns of the high-voltage system under specific operating conditions due to issues with the insulation fault monitoring mechanism.

This could result in loss of power to the electric drive unit, increasing the risk of a collision and posing a safety hazard, according to the announcement.

This recall constitutes a re-recall for certain vehicles included in the August 8, 2025 recall campaign.

During the previous recall implementation, some vehicles were not equipped with the correct software version. BMW will modify the repair measures in this recall by providing a free software upgrade to a higher version.

BMW and Momenta are conducting development and testing across four bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Nanjing.
