Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) expects its ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle) to reach its 300,000th delivery in November, marking a key milestone for one of its best-selling models.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker mentioned this on Weibo yesterday, saying that in the fiercely competitive RMB 300,000 ($42,100) pure-electric SUV segment, the ES6 is not just a fleeting hit but a deeply rooted "evergreen."

The ES6 delivered 2,930 units in September, bringing cumulative deliveries to 289,912 by the end of September, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The SUV currently offers only one variant in China, starting at RMB 338,000 including a 100-kWh battery pack.

As Nio's second mass-produced model following the ES8 SUV, the ES6 has been the EV maker's best-selling vehicle for several years, though its position has been overtaken by the ET5 Touring station wagon in recent months.

The ET5 Touring delivered 5,048 units in September, maintaining its position as Nio brand's top-selling model by monthly volume and surpassing the ES6 for the fourth consecutive month.

From January to September, the ET5 Touring delivered 35,275 units, slightly outpacing the ES6's 35,076 units.

The ET5 Touring's recent rise to become Nio brand's top-selling model has been somewhat unexpected for the company, Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong told media including CnEVPost during a September 21 media roundtable in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

Most people had previously viewed touring models and wagons as a niche market in China, but Nio has done quite well with them, Qin said.

"This has also made us reflect that we may need a more thorough and fundamental understanding of user needs," Qin said at the time.

The current ES6 model was launched on May 16, featuring significant upgrades over its predecessor and switching to Nio's in-house developed Shenji NX9031 smart driving chip.

The ES8 delivered 2,803 units in September, its highest since January 2019, making it Nio's third-highest selling model.
