Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw sales of its China-made vehicles rebound last month, partly driven by the launch of the six-seat Model Y L.
Tesla China sold 90,812 vehicles in September, including those sold domestically and exported from China to overseas markets, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This represents a 2.82 percent increase from the 88,321 units sold in the same period last year and a 9.16 percent rise from August's 83,192 units, marking a return to growth after two consecutive months of year-on-year declines.
The growth was partly driven by the Model Y L, a six-seat SUV that was launched in China on August 19 and began deliveries in early September.
On September 4, a local media outlet reported that Model Y L orders had reached 120,000 since its August 19 launch, averaging nearly 10,000 orders per day.
From January to September, Tesla China's sales totaled 606,364 vehicles, including exports to overseas markets, still down 10.27 percent year-on-year. This decline was primarily due to seven months of year-on-year decreases in the first nine months.
Tesla operates a factory in Shanghai producing the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, serving both domestic customers and functioning as an export hub.
In the third quarter, Tesla China's sales including exports totaled 241,890 units, accounting for 48.66 percent of Tesla's global deliveries of 497,099 units. This proportion stood at 51.31 percent and 49.91 percent in the first quarter and the second quarter respectively.
Tesla China's third-quarter sales declined 2.91 percent year-on-year, marking the fourth consecutive quarterly year-on-year drop, though it grew 26.17 percent compared to the second quarter.
