
Major electric vehicle (EV) makers mostly saw increases in insurance registrations in China last week, as the latter half of each month typically sees higher delivery volumes.
During the week of September 15-21, week 38 of 2025, Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) had 6,670 vehicle insurance registrations in China, an 8.10 percent increase from the previous week's 6,170 units, according to figures shared today by multiple automotive industry observers on Weibo.
Insurance registrations for the Nio main brand totaled 2,580 units last week, up 6.39 percent from 2,425 units the prior week.
Insurance registrations for its sub-brand Onvo came in at 2,780 units last week, a 6.11 percent increase from 2,620 units the previous week. This included 2,410 units of the L90 large SUV (sport utility vehicle) and 370 units of the L60 mid-size SUV.
The Firefly sub-brand recorded 1,310 insurance registrations last week, a 16.44 percent increase from the previous week's 1,125 units.
So far this month, Nio Inc has achieved 19,110 insurance registrations, comprising 7,535 from the Nio main brand, 8,050 from Onvo, and 3,525 from Firefly.
Nio officially launched the third-generation ES8 at Nio Day 2025 on September 20, with deliveries commencing the following day on September 21. This has yet to significantly contribute to weekly insurance registrations.
Earlier today, information on the Nio App indicated that Chinese customers ordering the ES8 now can expect deliveries 24-26 weeks after order confirmation, meaning the earliest possible delivery date is March 2026.
This indicates that the entire 40,000-unit production capacity for the new ES8 this year has already been sold out.
Nio Inc delivered a record 31,305 vehicles in August, comprising 10,525 units under the Nio main brand, 16,434 units under Onvo, and 4,346 units under Firefly.
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) recorded 17,300 insurance registrations in China last week -- its highest figure in the past 12 weeks -- representing a 12.70 percent increase from the previous week's 15,350 registrations.
The five-seat SUV Model Y registered 10,340 units last week, the six-seat SUV Model Y L registered 850 units, and the Model 3 sedan registered 6,060 units.
Tesla launched the Model Y L in China on August 19 and announced on September 2 that deliveries for the model had commenced.
Customers who order the Model Y L now are expected to receive deliveries in November, according to Tesla China's website.
Tesla's retail sales in China totaled 57,152 units in August, down 9.93 percent from 63,456 units in the same period last year, though up 40.71 percent from July's 40,617 units, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) recorded 9,200 insurance registrations last week, a 13.16 percent increase from the previous week's 8,130.
It delivered a record 37,709 vehicles in August, representing a 168.66 percent year-on-year increase and a 2.70 percent rise from July.
Xpeng announced on September 15 that it has opened its first European production facility in Austria, where it has already produced the first batch of Xpeng G6 and G9 SUVs.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) recorded 8,600 insurance registrations last week, a 6.57 percent increase from the previous week's 8,070 units. This includes 1,140 units of the newly launched Li i8 electric SUV.
The company launched the six-seat Li i8, its first pure-electric SUV, on July 29, with deliveries commencing on August 20.
Li Auto will roll out the five-seat Li i6, its second pure-electric SUV, on September 26, targeting the RMB 250,000 ($35,140) to RMB 300,000 market segment.
The company delivered 28,529 vehicles in August, a 40.72 percent year-on-year decline marking its third consecutive month of significant year-on-year contraction, and a 7.17 percent decrease from July.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) brand vehicles registered 70,700 insurance registrations last week, a 9.07 percent increase from the previous week's 64,820.
The company sold 373,626 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in August, up 0.15 percent year-on-year and up 8.52 percent month-on-month.
Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) recorded 10,800 insurance registrations last week, a 10.32 percent increase from the previous week's 9,790 units.
Xiaomi EV delivered 36,396 vehicles in August, marking the second consecutive month exceeding 30,000 units following July's 30,452 deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) brand insurance registrations totaled 3,200 units last week, flat from the previous week.
Zeekr Group delivered 44,843 vehicles in August, marking a 10.61 percent year-on-year increase and a 1.47 percent rise from July.
The Zeekr brand delivered 17,626 vehicles in August, down 2.16 percent year-on-year but up 3.82 percent from July.
Lynk & Co delivered 27,217 vehicles in August, up 20.81 percent year-on-year and flat from July's 27,216 units.
Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) recorded 12,900 insurance registrations last week, down 0.92 percent from the previous week's 13,020 units.
The company delivered 57,066 vehicles in August, marking its fourth consecutive month of record-high deliveries.
This represents Leapmotor's second monthly delivery exceeding 50,000 units, reflecting an 88.31 percent year-on-year increase and a 13.84 percent rise compared to July.
Aito -- the brand jointly developed by Huawei and Seres Group -- registered 10,200 vehicles last week, an 18.60 percent increase from the previous week's 8,600 units.
