General Motors today shared several images of a concept electric sedan from its Buick brand, showcasing design concepts that could be used in future Buick electric vehicle (EV) models.

GM has named the concept car the Electra Orbit, saying it was envisioned and developed by the GM China Advanced Design Center.

The Electra Orbit is a bold exploration of the Buick brand's heritage, said Stuart Norris, vice president of design for GM China.

By reinterpreting the space age theme, GM hopes to create a concept car that continues Buick's history and delivers an experimental and innovative experience, he said.

The concept car blends the optimism of the 1950s space age to push the creative boundaries of electric aesthetics, GM said.

Every curve of the Electra Orbit is like a star trail across the night sky, the auto giant said.

The concept car features a 2+2 seating layout and a futuristic cockpit design.

Buick is one of the US automakers that has responded positively to the rapid electrification of the Chinese market.

The brand unveiled its Xiao Yao architecture at the end of April, when it also announced its sub-brand Electra. Previously, the Electra name had been used in the names of several Buick EV models.

Last month, Buick previewed the Electra L7 in China, an extended-range sedan that will be based on the Xiao Yao architecture.

The Electra L7 will be equipped with Momenta's smart driving system and will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8755 cockpit chip.

The Buick Electra L7 measures 5,032 mm in length and targets the premium sedan market priced at the RMB 300,000 ($41,790) level.
