China's new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership continues to grow, despite a slight decline in the share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) compared to the end of last year.
As of the end of June, China's NEV ownership reached 36.89 million units, accounting for 10.27 percent of the total vehicle ownership of 359 million units, up from 8.9 percent at the end of 2024, according to data released today by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
In China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
As of the end of June, China's BEV ownership stood at 25.54 million units, accounting for 69.23 percent of the total NEV ownership.
It is worth noting that this ratio is lower than 70.34 percent at the end of 2024, which means that PHEVs ownership saw faster growth in the first half of the year.
In the first half of the year, 5.62 million new NEVs were registered, a year-on-year increase of 27.86 percent and accounting for 44.97 percent of all new vehicle registrations.
China's NEV ownership surpassed the 10 million milestone for the first time by the end of June 2022 and exceeded 20 million by the end of 2023. This figure surpassed 30 million by the end of 2024.
In the first half of 2025, China registered 12.5 million new vehicles, a 0.68 percent increase from the first half of 2024, according to MPS.
China has 101 cities with a vehicle ownership exceeding 1 million units, 45 cities exceeding 2 million units, and 27 cities exceeding 3 million units.
Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing have over 6 million vehicles each, while Suzhou, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, and Xi'an have over 5 million vehicles each.
As of the end of June, the total number of motor vehicle drivers in China, including motorcycle drivers, reached 550 million. The number of car drivers was 515 million, accounting for 93.68 percent of the total number of drivers.
In the first half of 2025, the number of new drivers' licenses issued in China reached 12.58 million.
