China's new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership reached 31.4 million units at the end of December, surpassing the 30 million mark and accounting for 8.9 percent of the 353 million total vehicle ownership, according to data released today by the country's Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
In China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
As of the end of December, the ownership of BEVs in China stood at 22.09 million units, accounting for 70.34 percent of the total number of NEVs.
In 2024, newly registered NEVs amounted to 11.25 million units, a year-on-year increase of 51.49 percent, accounting for 41.83 percent of new vehicle registrations.
China's NEV ownership surpassed the 10 million milestone for the first time at the end of June 2022, and exceeded 20 million at the end of 2023.
