SAIC Motor (SHA: 600104) has added a new vessel to its car carrier fleet, as Chinese automakers increasingly build their own fleets to meet the needs of overseas market expansion.

Anji Logistics' 37th self-operated roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel was delivered at the Jiangnan Shipyard on June 25, the logistics unit under SAIC Motor announced today.

The vessel, named "Anji Commonality," is the third 7,800-vehicle capacity ro-ro ship built by Jiangnan Shipyard and the fourth Anji Logistics ocean-going car carrier to be commissioned in the first half of 2025.

Anji Commonality can flexibly accommodate various types of vehicles, including sedans, buses, and trucks, the company said.

The vessel is equipped with WinGD dual-fuel main engines, an intelligent control exhaust gas recirculation system, and an LNG fuel supply system, with an energy efficiency design index (EEDI) reduced by over 40 percent compared to the baseline, Anji said.

The destination of Anji Commonality's maiden voyage is Europe, according to the company.

As SAIC enhances its ocean-going ro-ro shipping capacity, it has established a fleet of 37 vessels, the largest self-operated automotive logistics shipping fleet in China.

Anji Logistics operates eight international routes covering Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Europe, it said.

As Chinese automakers intensify their efforts to expand into overseas markets, establishing an in-house car transport fleet has become a priority.

Earlier this week, BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) added its sixth car carrier, the BYD Changsha, to its fleet, while its seventh car carrier, the BYD Zhengzhou, began sea trials.

Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) saw its first self-operated car carrier enter service in late May, carrying over 5,000 vehicles to European countries including the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

BYD's sixth car carrier, BYD Changsha, set sail today, just days after BYD Xi'an entered service.
