WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD), a Chinese autonomous driving technology company, today announced its entry into the Saudi Arabian market, marking a further expansion of its global footprint.
As a first step into Saudi Arabia, WeRide has been testing and deploying autonomous products, including Robotaxi, Robobus, and Robosweeper, in cities like Riyadh and El Ola, according to an announcement from the company today.
This is laying the groundwork for WeRide to operate commercially at scale in Saudi Arabia, the company said.
WeRide will begin robotaxi pilot operations on Uber Technologies' (NYSE: UBER) platform in the coming months, with plans to launch commercial robotaxi operations in Saudi Arabia within 2025.
The company is also testing and deploying autonomous Robobus in several areas of Saudi Arabia, including King Fahad Medical City, Aramco Employee Community, AlUla, The Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh.
WeRide's Robotaxi and Robobus will help build a smarter and more sustainable transportation infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, the company said.
Founded in 2017, WeRide is one of the first companies in China to focus on high-level smart driving solutions. On October 25 last year, the company went public on Nasdaq.
In September 2024, WeRide entered into a partnership with Uber to advance its self-driving vehicles for use on the Uber platform.
In December 2024, the two companies started robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi, with each autonomous vehicle equipped with a safety officer.
In April 2025, WeRide and Uber expanded their partnership to Dubai with plans to launch robotaxi services on the Uber platform.
In early May, WeRide announced that it and Uber would further expand their strategic partnership to include 15 new cities around the world over the next five years, including Europe and the Middle East.
On May 16, WeRide said it started a completely unmanned robotaxi trial operation in Abu Dhabi, creating the first purely unmanned robotaxi fleet in the Middle East.
WeRide is currently developing, testing and operating autonomous vehicles in 30 cities in 10 countries around the world.
