Great Wall Motor (HKG: 2333) has been working on a supercar project since five years ago, with the goal of building a car that would give drivers an adrenaline surge, according to the Chinese automaker's CTO Wu Huixiao.
Wu revealed the program in an interview with car blogger @保镖的车库, according to a video posted yesterday.
The reason Great Wall Motor hasn't released the supercar after all this time is because the company wants to keep costs down further, Wu said.
The supercar will be stunning once it is launched, she said.
Asked if Great Wall Motor would let the supercar challenge the Nürburgring track in Germany, she did not give a direct answer but said that the company had recently invited track experts from Europe.
Wu mentioned that Great Wall Motor encountered a lot of difficulties with the carbon pod and did a lot of testing for it.
Carbon pods are very difficult to make and no company in China can do it well, she said.
Asked how the supercar compares to the Ferrari SF90, Wu said Great Wall Motor's supercar would be better, but the company would learn from its peers.
Great Wall Motor, which has brands including Haval, Wey, Tank and Ora, currently focuses mainly on SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and pickup trucks.
The company sold 256,807 vehicles in the first quarter, down 6.73 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
One of Great Wall Motor's main competitors, BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), has already launched a supercar.
BYD's premium brand Yangwang rolled out the U9 electric supercar on February 25, 2024, a two-seater model with a powertrain capable of delivering up to 1,306 Ps of horsepower, 1,680 Nm of power output, and can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.36 seconds.
Only one version of the Yangwang U9 is available, with a starting price of RMB 1.68 million ($230,980).
Additionally, BYD's other premium brand Denza unveiled the Denza Z concept sports car on April 23, the first day of the 2025 Shanghai auto show.
