Huawei has launched a supercharger with over 1 MW of peak charging power, as the charging power race continues.

The Chinese tech giant rolled out the supercharger in Shanghai today, with a peak charging power of up to 1.5 MW, claiming it is the industry's first fully liquid-cooled MW-class supercharging solution.

The charger is currently aimed at heavy truck usage scenarios, though Huawei said it can also be used for passenger cars.

When using two charging guns at the same time, the charging current is up to 2400A, according to the company.

An electric heavy truck can be charged from 10 percent to 90 percent in 15 minutes to get about 300 kWh of power, a nearly fourfold improvement over traditional fast-charging piles, Huawei said.

The fully liquid-cooled supercharger uses immersion liquid-cooling technology, which has a service life of 10 years and can operate stably in extreme environments ranging from -30°C to 60°C, according to Huawei.

The device supports 99 percent of existing EV models, increasing charging efficiency by 30 percent and reducing operating costs by 20 percent in real-world tests, according to the company.

Huawei has entered into strategic cooperation with companies including SF Express and JD.com to deploy the first 5,000 electric heavy trucks adapted to the MW-class supercharger.

Additionally, the company has joined forces with 11 vehicle companies to develop more than 30 heavy truck models that support 4C supercharging, covering operational scenarios including ports and mines.

Huawei is the latest company to announce peak charging power of more than 1 MW, as China's electric vehicle (EV) industry scrambles to unveil ultra-high-power charging technology this year.

At its Tech Day event yesterday, CATL (SHE: 300750) unveiled its second-generation Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery, which it said pushes the limits of ultra-fast charging performance and sets a new world record for charging rates.

The battery has a peak charging power of up to 1.3 MW and a range of up to 2.5 kilometers per second of charge, virtually eliminating the pain of waiting for a charge, CATL said.

On March 31, (NYSE: ZK) said it will officially launch a fully liquid-cooled charger with 1.2 MW of peak power per charging gun in the second quarter.

On March 17, (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) unveiled a supercharger that supports 1 MW of power, which it said can add 400 kilometers of range to an EV in 5 minutes.

CATL has showcased its latest innovations ahead of the Shanghai auto show, as it tries to push the "boundaries" even further.
