BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has officially entered the Swiss passenger car market, as the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker continues its expansion in Europe.
The company held a brand launch event in Switzerland from April 1 to April 2 to officially announce its entry into the local market, according to an announcement on Saturday.
The first BYD models available in Switzerland include the all-electric sedan Seal, the electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) Sealion 07 EV, and the hybrid SUV Song Plus DM-i.
The Sealion 07 has been rebranded locally as the Sealion 7, and the Song Plus DM-i has been rebranded as the Seal U DM-i.
Together with dealer Harmony, BYD opened its first store in Switzerland, located at Uraniastrasse 31 in the center of Zurich.
BYD is also working with Automotive Suisse to open stores in Lugano and Bellinzona. The two showrooms will begin trial operations in April, with the official opening scheduled for the third quarter.
By the end of the year, BYD will have 15 sales points in Switzerland, it said.
The BYD Seal electric sedan is available in Switzerland in two trims, both with a battery capacity of 82.5 kWh and a WLTP range of up to 570 kilometers.
The Sealion 7 is available in Switzerland with two powertrains and three trim levels and has a WLTP range of up to 502 kilometers.
The Seal U DM-i is available in three interior trim levels and has a total WLTP range of more than 1,100 kilometers on a full charge and a full tank of gasoline.
"At BYD, our mission is to make our sustainable technologies as accessible to as many consumers as possible, so every new market in Europe is extremely important to us," said Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD.
BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by combustion engines in March 2022, switching to a focus on the production of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The company sold 377,420 NEVs in March, up 24.78 percent year-on-year and up 16.90 percent from February, according to figures it announced on April 1.
It sold a record 72,723 vehicles overseas in March, up 89.22 percent year-on-year and up 8.50 percent from February.
