BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has officially launched the Sealion 05 EV, the latest model in its Ocean series and another competitive new model after the Qin L EV launched two days ago.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker rolled out the compact electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) at an event today, with a starting price of RMB 117,800 ($16,230).
Similar to the Qin L EV electric sedan, which was launched on March 23 with a starting price of RMB 119,800, BYD is only offering three options for the Sealion 05 EV, unlike its previous models which usually come in multiple variants.
The starting prices for the three variants of the Sealion 05 EV are RMB 117,800, RMB 127,800 and RMB 137,800 respectively.
The SUV is built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo vehicle platform, with a length, width and height of 4,520 mm, 1,860 mm and 1,630 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,720 mm.
BYD launched the e-Platform 3.0 Evo in May 2024, which offers greater integration, performance and charging speed.
The Sealion 05 EV is a rear-wheel-drive model that uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor.
The entry-level version has a motor with a peak power of 140 kW and a peak torque of 330 Nm, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
The other two variants both have a peak motor power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 330 Nm, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds.
The Sealion 05 EV comes standard with BYD's lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based blade battery. The entry-level version has a battery pack capacity of 50.05 kWh and a CLTC range of 430 km.
The two higher-priced variants both have a battery capacity of 60.9 kWh and a CLTC range of 520 km.
The model supports fast charging and can be charged from 30 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes.
The Sealion 05 EV comes standard with BYD's God's Eye C smart driving system. The smart driving solution is DiPilot 100, which supports features including NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) on highways and expressways.
On February 10, BYD announced that it would call its smart driving system the "God's Eye". The God's Eye C system does not have LiDAR, but uses a camera vision solution for its affordable models.
The launch of the Sealion 05 EV further enriches the Sealion family.
The Sealion 07 EV, which was launched on May 10, 2024, is the first model in the Sealion family and the first model on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform.
The second model in the family, the Sealion 05 DM-i, was launched on September 23, 2024, and is equipped with BYD's latest DM 5.0 hybrid technology.
The Sealion family sold 21,178 vehicles in the first two months of the year, contributing 3.40 percent of BYD's NEV sales in the same period, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
