BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has officially launched the Qin L EV pure electric sedan, which is similar in size to Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model 3, but is priced lower to target younger people.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker rolled out the mid-size all-electric sedan at an event today, built on its e-Platform 3.0 Evo vehicle platform and comes standard with free driver assistance features.

The Qin L EV measures 4,720 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

For comparison, the Model 3 currently sold in China has a length, width and height of 4,720 mm, 1,848 mm and 1,442 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,875 mm.

BYD offers the Qin L EV in three variants, with starting prices of RMB 119,800 ($16,530), RMB 129,800 and RMB 139,800.

The Model 3 is currently available in China in three variants -- a rear-wheel drive version with a starting price of RMB 235,500, a long-range all-wheel drive version with a starting price of RMB 275,500, and a performance all-wheel drive version with a starting price of RMB 339,500.

The entry-level version of the BYD Qin L EV is equipped with a 46.08-kWh battery pack and has a CLTC range of 470 km. The other two higher-priced variants both have a 56.64-kWh battery pack and a CLTC range of 545 km.

All three variants of the BYD sedan are single-motor rear-wheel drive models, with the entry-level variant having a motor with a peak power of 110 kW and a peak torque of 220 Nm. The other two variants have a motor with a peak power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 330 Nm.

The model can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.1 seconds or 3.1 seconds. The specification sheet does not show the time it takes to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

It supports fast charging and can go from 30 percent to 80 percent in 24 minutes.

The BYD Qin L EV comes standard with the free God's Eye C smart driving system. The smart driving solution is DiPilot 100, and the hardware includes 12 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic radars.

The smart driving system supports functions including NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) on highways and expressways, automatic parking, and remote parking.

BYD announced on February 10 that it would call its smart driving system the God's Eye, and that the God's Eye C system would not have LiDAR but instead use a camera vision solution for its affordable models.

Similar to many popular models today, BYD offers an on-board refrigerator for the Qin L EV, which can cool to -6°C and heat to 50°C.

BYD began warming up the Qin L EV a month ago, emphasizing at the time that the model would target young people.

The Qin L EV is another electric sedan on the Chinese market with a similar size to the Tesla Model 3, but at lower prices.

The (NYSE: XPEV) Mona M03, launched on August 27, 2024, is a previous model of this type and has helped the company achieve significant sales growth in the past few months.

In February, the Mona M03 delivered 15,312 units, the third consecutive month of deliveries exceeding 15,000 units, contributing 50.28 percent of Xpeng's monthly deliveries of 30,453, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

For BYD, the launch of the Qin L EV is expected to drive sales of the already hot-selling Qin family models even higher.

The Qin family sold 732,252 units in 2024, contributing 17.14 percent of BYD's annual NEV sales, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

In the first two months of this year, the Qin family sold 79,315 units, a year-on-year increase of 108.95 percent.

In addition to the Qin L EV, the Qin family also includes the Qin L DM-i, Qin Plus DM-i, and Qin Plus EV.
