BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has begun previewing the Sealion 05 EV, a new all-electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) model that will be the latest addition to its Oceal lineup.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker shared a video on Weibo this past weekend showing some details of the Sealion 05 EV's exterior.
The Sealion 05 EV will be built on an all-new platform with a rear drive powertrain, BYD wrote on Weibo.
The video shared by BYD shows that the Sealion 05 EV will feature BYD's God's Eye smart driving system.
On March 15, Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD's Oceal series sales division, said on Weibo that the Sealion 05 EV would be a new addition to the Sealion lineup and shared three design sketches about the model.
BYD has yet to release more information about the Sealion 05 EV, an electric SUV that has entered a regulatory catalog from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) last December.
The Sealion 05 EV that made it into the catalog comes in two versions, with lengths, widths and heights of 4,520 mm, 1,860 mm and 1,630 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,720 mm.
This is slightly smaller than the dimensions of the hybrid Sealion 05 DM-i, which measures 4,710 mm, 1,880 mm, 1,690/1,720 mm and has a wheelbase of 2,712 mm.
The two versions of the Sealion 05 EV weigh 1,780 kg and 1,670 kg, respectively, and both support a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour.
The two variants are both powered by a single motor with 140 kW and 160 kW peak power options, according to its filing information.
The car will be offered with two range options, with battery pack capacities of 50.048 kWh and 60.928 kWh, and ranges of 430 km and 520 km, respectively.
The Sealion 05 DM-i, launched on September 23, 2024, is equipped with BYD's latest DM 5.0 hybrid technology.
In addition to the Sealion 05 DM-i, BYD's Sealion lineup includes the Sealion 07 EV launched on May 10 last year -- the first model of BYD's all-electric e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform.
The Sealion 07 EV is a competitor to Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y, with a starting price range of RMB 189,800 ($26,220) to RMB 239,800 in China.
The Sealion 07 EV is larger than the Sealion 05 EV, with length, width and height of 4,830 mm, 1,925 mm and 1,620 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,930 mm.
The smaller Sealion 05 EV is expected to target a market priced at around RMB 150,000, given the smaller dimensions.
