Dongfeng Motor's premium electric vehicle (EV) unit, Voyah, has initiated research on its third-generation solid-state battery technology, local media Cailian reported today.

The energy density of the next-generation power battery system will remain at 300 Wh/kg, but the charging multiplier has been increased to 3 to 5 C, according to the report.

C is a measure of how quickly a battery can be recharged, and 5 C means that the battery could theoretically be fully charged in one-fifth of an hour -- 12 minutes.

The solid-state battery has zero electrolyte content and can operate in extremely wide temperature range conditions, the report said.

Voyah is a brand announced by Dongfeng in late 2020, with the first model, the Voyah Free, officially launched in June 2021.

On May 7, 2022, the Dream MPV, Voyah's second model, was launched in China, and on April 18, 2023, Voyah's third model, the Zhuiguang sedan, was launched.

Voyah's first-generation semisolid batteries had been already in volume use in the Dream MPV and Zhuiguang sedan, the company said previously.

Last year, Voyah unveiled its Amber Battery, which has an energy density of 212 Wh/kg and a claimed range of more than 900 km.

The battery is based on the 800 V platform and has a 5 C ultra-fast charging capability that can replenish 450 km of range in 10 minutes.
