Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) sold fewer China-made vehicles last month, affected by the Chinese New Year holiday like other Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers.

Tesla China sold 63,238 vehicles in January, including those sold in China and those exported from China to overseas markets, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The just-concluded Chinese New Year holiday was from January 28 to February 4. Last year the holiday was February 10-17, 2024. The one-week break usually hits production and deliveries significantly.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.

Tesla planned to suspend part of its production lines in Shanghai that makes its revamped Model Y for about three weeks during the Chinese New Year to better optimize equipment, Bloomberg said in a January 15 report, citing people familiar with the matter.

The extended suspension would allow Tesla to more efficiently prepare the production lines to increase production of the new SUV (sport utility vehicle) model, the report said.

A portion of the affected Model Y production lines would be shut down from January 22 to February 14, according to Bloomberg.

Another area of the Shanghai factory that produces the Model 3 electric sedan would be closed from January 26 to February 3, the report said.

Tesla launched the facelifted five-seat Model Y in China on January 10, marking the first time it has made a major update to a model first in China.

The facelifted Model Y was better received than the facelifted Model 3 after its launch in China, with more than 70,000 orders placed in the first five days, local media outlet Yicai said in a January 25 story, citing an insider.

On February 5, the first working day of the Year of the Snake in the Chinese lunar calendar, Tesla announced an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,100) for all variants of the Model 3 electric sedan, firing the first shot in the price war.
