- With the looming US ban on TikTok, about 1 million new users have flocked to RedNote in the past few days.
William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of Nio (NYSE: NIO), has posted a welcome to "TikTok refugees" on RedNote, amid an influx of foreign users to the Chinese social media app.
In a post published today on RedNote, known in China as Xiaohongshu (literally "little red book"), Li welcomed overseas users new to the platform in English, explaining a new term that has emerged in China in recent years, “Jiadian”.
"Hello, friends. Welcome to China! Welcome to Xiaohongshu! I'm William Li from NIO. Let's Jiadian! 一起加电!(Yiqi Jiadian)," Li wrote.
He explains the meaning of Jiadian in detail:
You may ask, what is "Jiadian" ?
In China, we used to say Jiayou (加油, literally "add oil") to express encouragement and support. But as smart electric vehicles become so popular in China, more and more people are saying Jiadian (加电, literally "add electricity") instead!
NIO has pioneered a "Chargeable, Swappable, Upgradable" power solution for smart EVs, featuring our unique battery swap technology. With NIO's Power Swap Stations, you can hit the road with a full charge in just 3 minutes!
Come and experience it. Let's Jiadian - Yiqi Jiadian!
In the comments section of the post, there are some comments from readers with IP addresses in other countries, one of which reads "I love the battery swap idea. It's really convenient for E car. Let's Jiadian together 2025."
Li launched his personal account with RedNote in September 2024 and currently has 35,000 followers on the social media platform.
He had previously posted multiple posts on the platform to market the Nio brand with relative ease.
RedNote is a platform that focuses on lifestyle advice covering beauty, food, travel and much more.
With the looming US ban on TikTok, which is used by 170 million Americans, there has been an influx of about 1 million new users to RedNote in the past few days, according to multiple media reports.
This has opened up a rare opportunity for a large number of native Chinese to be able to interact directly with foreigners on topics related to healthcare, education, and lifestyle in their respective countries, at a time when mainstream overseas social media platforms are inaccessible in China.
Prior to Li, Nio's vice president of power business, Shen Fei, posted on RedNote yesterday his welcome to new overseas users coming to the platform.
