Porsche is recalling 15,906 imported Taycan series electric vehicles (EVs) in China as an expansion of a recall announced in May due to the risk of power battery fires.

The automaker is recalling a total of 15,906 Taycan-series EVs manufactured between January 7, 2020, and December 15, 2023, starting November 15, according to an announcement posted on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website on Friday.

Some of the vehicles within the recall may have short circuits within the high-voltage power battery module, which in extreme cases may lead to thermal runaway of the battery module, posing a risk of fire, according to the announcement.

Porsche will commission authorized dealers to test the high-voltage power batteries of the vehicles within the recall, and replace the battery modules free of charge if abnormalities exist.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2025, Porsche will implement the final recall measure by installing on-board diagnostic software for the vehicles within the recall, which will detect potential problems with the battery module and warn the driver before the risk occurs. For abnormal battery modules, Porsche will replace them.

Porsche is advising users to limit their charging power to 80 percent before the recall is implemented.

This is an expansion of a recall announced by Porsche on May 11, when the automaker announced that it was recalling a total of 1,590 Taycan series EVs in China due to the risk of battery fires.

The Taycan is one of the highest-priced EVs available in China, with information on Porsche's website indicating that it has a starting price range of RMB 1,038,000 ($143,480) to RMB 1,998,000 in China.

Last October, Porsche recalled 2,570 Taycan EVs in China due to the risk of battery thermal runaway.

In July, a total of 17,278 Taycan EVs were recalled because of a defective braking system.
