Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw further growth in China-made vehicles sold last month, coming in near its record high levels.

Tesla China sold 88,321 vehicles in September, including those sold in China and those exported from China to overseas markets, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The figure is a new high since March, when it stood at 89,064 vehicles, up 1.87 percent from 86,697 in August and up 19.24 percent from 74,073 a year ago.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.

On September 28, Tesla said it reached the 1 million vehicle milestone for exports from China.

In the January-August period of this year, Giga Shanghai exported 199,437 vehicles, a 15.05 percent decrease year-on-year.

By the end of August, Tesla's Shanghai factory had exported a total of 966,945 vehicles, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.

Figures for Tesla's September sales in China and vehicles exported from its Shanghai factory are not yet available.

In the third quarter, Tesla China sold a record 249,135 vehicles, up 11.96 percent year-on-year and up 21.09 percent from the second quarter.

Sales in the quarter contributed 53.82 percent of Tesla's global deliveries of 462,890, up from 46.34 percent in the second quarter, and up from 51.15 percent in the same period last year.

In the January-September period, Tesla China sold 675,758 vehicles, down 3.33 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Tesla's main Chinese counterparts reported strong September delivery numbers earlier this month.

(NASDAQ: LI) delivered a record 53,709 vehicles in September, surpassing its previous record of 51,000 in July.

BYD and Li Auto make both hybrids and battery electric vehicle (BEV) models, while Tesla, Nio and Xpeng only make BEVs.
