Some of the vehicles in the recall may have a system that fails to detect the unlocked state of the frunk lid after it has been unlocked, which could result in the frunk lid being lifted while the vehicle is in motion.
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has initiated yet another large-scale recall in China, which will be fixed via an OTA (over-the-air) update.
Effective immediately, Tesla is recalling a total of 1,683,627 locally produced Model 3 and Model Y cars, as well as imported Model S and Model X vehicles with production dates between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024, according to an announcement on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website today.
Some of the vehicles included in this recall may have a latch assembly system that fails to detect that the frunk lid is in the unlocked state after the lid has been unlocked, resulting in the vehicle failing to alert that the frunk is unlocked, according to the announcement.
In extreme cases, this could result in the frunk lid being lifted while the vehicle is in motion, affecting the driver's field of vision and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash, the announcement said.
Tesla will upgrade the software for the recalled vehicles via OTA technology, free of charge, so that the vehicles can recognize the malfunctioning state of the frunk latch and emit a text and beep alert that the frunk is not locked.
For vehicles where testing reveals a malfunctioning frunk latch, Tesla will repair them free of charge.
For vehicles that cannot be upgraded via OTA technology, Tesla service centers will contact users to implement the recall.
This Tesla's biggest recalls in China and could involve almost all of its vehicles in the country.
Last December 29, Tesla announced a recall of 1,610,105 vehicles in China, its last largest recall.
The December recall was due to the possibility that drivers could misuse the vehicle's L2 driver assist feature, increasing the risk of the vehicle being involved in a collision. Tesla subsequently provided a fix via an OTA update.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai, which began construction on January 7, 2019, and became operational at the end of 2019, making it China's first wholly foreign-owned auto manufacturing project.
Giga Shanghai began delivering Model 3 sedans to local consumers in January 2020 and Model Y crossovers in January 2021.The Model S and Model X are not produced in China.
By the end of June, Tesla had delivered a cumulative total of 1,780,425 locally produced Model 3s and Model Ys in China, data compiled by CnEVPost showed.
