The hybrid Sealion 05 will be the second model in the Sealion lineup after the Sealion 07 EV, and is slightly smaller in size than the Tesla Model Y.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) made the filing for the Sealion 05, which will be a new addition to its Sealion lineup.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the latest batch of models that will be allowed to be sold in its catalog for public comment today, and the BYD Sealion 05 is included.
The public can submit their feedback between July 13-19. Entry into the catalog is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China.
There are two versions of the Sealion 05 that made it into the catalog, both of which are hybrid models, and both of which are produced at BYD's manufacturing facility in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, in northwest China.
The five-seat SUV measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,690/1,720 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,712 mm.
These dimensions are slightly smaller than those of the Tesla Model Y, which has a length, width and height of 4,750 mm, 1,921 mm, 1,624 mm and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.
The two versions of the Sealion 05 weigh 1,635 kg and 1,765 kg, respectively, and both support a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour.
The model is powered by an engine with a displacement of 1,498 ml and 74 kW, and both versions are powered by a single motor with a peak power of 120 kW.
The images in the filing show the model name as Sealion 05, though the options hint that it may add the DM-i to the name.
The Sealion 05 will be the second model in the Sealion range after the Sea Lion 07 EV.
BYD launched the Sealion 07 EV on May 10, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) model is the first of its e-Platform 3.0 Evo.
The Sealion 07 EV has a starting price of RMB 189,800 ($26,170), with deliveries beginning later in May.
The Sealion is a new lineup for BYD, and will be BYD's SUV lineup in the Ocean series, BYD previously said.
The hybrid Sealion 05 is expected to feature BYD's fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) technology, which was launched on May 28 and is expected to deliver lower energy consumption.
With the launch of DM 5.0, BYD launched two hybrid sedans, the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i, both of which have a combined range of more than 2,000 kilometers.
