A joint venture of Japanese auto giant Toyota in China will adopt a smart driving solution from local startup Momenta, confirming part of a previous rumor.

GAC Toyota and Momenta have jointly created an end-to-end, full-scenario intelligent driving solution that works on any road, the Toyota-GAC Group joint venture announced on Weibo yesterday.

The Toyota bZ3X will be the first to feature the smart driving solution, which can be used on city roads, highways, and parking scenarios, GAC Toyota said.

GAC Toyota's Weibo post doesn't mention much more, but hints that more details are expected to be announced at the GAC Toyota Technology Open Day on June 28.

Originally unveiled in China on October 25, 2022, the Toyota bZ3 is the second model in Toyota's bZ lineup after the bZ4X SUV.

On January 29, Toyota's other joint venture in China, FAW Toyota, made the 2024 bZ3 available in China at a starting price of RMB 169,800 ($23,400).

GAC Toyota's website shows that it has not yet begun offering the bZ3, and that its bZ lineup is limited to the bZ4X.

On April 7, local media outlet Tencent News cited people familiar with the matter as saying that Toyota's global models will use a solution jointly developed by it with Huawei and Momenta.

The solution is different from Huawei's existing ADS assisted driving system, with Momenta and Huawei providing software and hardware solutions respectively, and the three parties working together for integration, the report noted.

GAC Toyota's poster yesterday made no mention of Huawei. Momenta is a company backed by Toyota.

On March 18, 2020, Momenta announced a strategic partnership with Toyota to provide the automaker with HD maps and update services based on camera vision technology, and to jointly promote the commercialization of Toyota's Automated Mapping Platform (AMP) in China.

On March 19, 2021, Momenta announced the completion of its Series C financing totaling $500 million, with Toyota among the lead investors.
