Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) plans to start developing assisted driving software usable in international markets in 2024, after the feature becomes available in hundreds of cities in China.

Xpeng will launch its point-to-point XNGP (Xpeng navigation guided pilot) feature in China in 2024, which will additionally cover internal roads and parking lot scenarios in addition to highways and city roads, the company's chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said on January 30.

The company will advance the global development of XNGP this year and next, with the development of a globally usable highway NGP beginning in 2024 and a globally usable XNGP beginning in 2025, Mr. He said at an event last night.

Mr. He said he expects owners to have the same smart driving experience when driving Xpeng vehicles overseas as they do at home.

XNGP is Xpeng's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), similar to 's (NASDAQ: TSLA) FSD (Full Self-Driving).

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker's goal is for the XNGP to provide driver assistance in all scenarios, including highways, city roads, internal campus roads, and parking lots.

The feature was initially available only on highways, then known as Highway NGP, and Xpeng gradually expanded its coverage to urban areas, also known as City NGP, with the first five cities covered being Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Shanghai, and Beijing.

On January 2, Xpeng announced that XNGP's coverage in China expanded to 243 cities.

To date, the NGP has covered 569,000 kilometers, with more than 3.7 million kilometers of actual road verification and more than 150 million kilometers of simulation, Mr. He said at yesterday's event.

The accident rate of Xpeng's intelligent driving is only one-tenth of that of manual driving, and the average number of passive takeovers per 1,000 kilometers of high-speed NGP is only 0.5, he said.

Xpeng's annual investment in AI technology centered on smart driving reached RMB 3.5 billion ($490 million), with a team size of more than 3,000 people, Mr. He said.
