Insurance registrations for major electric vehicle (EV) makers in China fell significantly last week, with the beginning of the year and the start of the month typically being a delivery low.

For the week of January 1-7, Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) sold 4,300 units, the second highest number among the new car makers, the company said today on Weibo.

As before, Li Auto didn't explain the basis for calculating the weekly sales, but apparently, they were insurance registrations. The company suspended sharing this data in May 2023, but has since resumed sharing.

Li Auto's insurance registrations last week were down 69.50 percent from the previous week's 14,100 units. The company's three models currently on sale are the Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9, all of which are extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), essentially plug-in hybrids.

The company delivered a record 50,353 vehicles in December, marking the first time monthly deliveries have exceeded the 50,000-unit mark, according to figures it announced on January 1.

(NYSE: NIO) was at 3,000 units last week, down 47.37 percent from 5,700 the week before.

Nio delivered 18,012 vehicles in December, the third-highest on record behind July's 20,462 and August's 19,329, according to data it released on January 1.

(NYSE: XPEV) was at 1,400 units last week, down 70.83 percent from 4,800 units the week before.

Xpeng delivered 20,115 vehicles in December, its third consecutive month over the 20,000-unit mark, according to data it released on January 1.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) saw 3,200 insurance registrations in China last week, down 79.75 percent from 15,800 the week before.

Tesla sold 94,139 China-made vehicles in December, including 75,805 sold in China and 18,334 exported from its Shanghai plant, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDF) saw 44,400 insurance registrations in China last week, down 42.19 percent from 76,800 the week before.

BYD sold 341,043 NEVs in December, including 340,178 passenger NEVs, and 865 commercial NEVs, according to figures it announced on January 1.

BYD's premium brand Denza was at 1,600 units last week, down 51.52 percent from 3,300 units in the previous week.

Denza sold 11,929 units in December, including 10,492 D9 MPVs, 1,035 N7 SUVs, and 402 N8 SUVs.

was at 2,400 units in the last week, down 42.86 percent from 4,200 units in the previous week.

Zeekr delivered 13,476 vehicles in December, a record high, according to data released by the company on January 1.

Leapmotor was at 2,800 vehicles last week, down 37.78 percent from 4,500 the week before.
