BYD today saw the 500,000th unit of the Dolphin compact electric vehicle (EV) roll off the production line, marking a milestone for its first e-Platform 3.0-based model.

BYD originally launched the Dolphin on August 29, 2021, as the first product in its Ocean vehicle lineup.

Cumulative deliveries of the Dolphin stood at 462,558 units at the end of August, with monthly deliveries exceeding 30,000 units in each of the past six months, data monitored by CnEVPost showed.

The Dolphin sold 32,745 units in August, up 39.52 percent year-on-year, and was the fourth best-selling BYD model last month.

BYD launched two new versions of the Dolphin today to commemorate the model's 500,000th unit off the line.

Starting at RMB 126,800 ($17,360) and RMB 139,800 respectively, these two new versions are identical to the regular version in terms of core specifications, with the higher-priced version packing more powerful assisted driving capabilities.

Both commemorative versions of the Dolphin come in a red and black color scheme, which is not available on the regular model.

BYD is offering a 2-year 0 percent interest loan and a RMB 2,000 trade-in subsidy for the Dolphin's commemorative editions.

The Dolphin measures 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

With the addition of two commemorative edition models, the Dolphin is now available in five versions with starting prices of RMB 116,800, RMB 123,800, RMB 126,800, RMB 136,800 and RMB 139,800.

The model's three lower-priced versions are powered by an electric motor with a maximum power of 70 kW and a peak torque of 180 Nm, which allows them to accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 3.9 seconds. They all come with a battery pack with a capacity of 44.9 kWh and an NEDC range of 420 kilometers.

The other two more expensive versions are powered by an electric motor with a maximum power of 130 kW and a peak torque of 290 Nm, and can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 3 seconds. They also carry a battery pack with a capacity of 44.9 kWh and an NEDC range of 401 kilometers.

The model supports fast charging across the board and can be charged from 30 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes, according to its configuration sheet.

BYD is bringing the Dolphin to more overseas markets, announcing earlier today that the model is now available in Mexico. On September 20, BYD launched the Dolphin in Japan.
