Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province, has become the latest city to support new energy vehicle (NEV) consumption through subsidies after Shanghai and Beijing.
The city recently released a work plan to support the consumption of NEVs, encouraging consumers to purchase NEVs when replacing as well as buying new vehicles.
Wuhan's specific subsidy policies include:
Individual consumers with Wuhan license plates who transfer or scrap their old vehicles and purchase NEVs will receive subsidies of RMB 5,000 ($750) and RMB 8,000 respectively during the use of the vehicle.
Individual consumers who purchase a qualifying NEV in Wuhan and register it in the city will receive a gift package worth RMB 3,000 per vehicle, including an RMB 1,000 purchase discount, a free gift worth RMB 1,000, and an RMB 1,000 charging subsidy.
Notably, the subsidies are in addition to China's purchase tax exemption for NEVs.
These subsidies are limited to consumers who purchase NEVs during the year and are valid from June 11 to December 31.
Eligible NEVs include pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) including extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
It is worth noting that not all NEVs are included, with a list showing only 22 models, including three from Dongfeng Honda, two from Voyah and all of Nio's models.
In addition to the subsidies, Wuhan has plans to replace 14,000 traditional cabs and 1,800 buses with NEVs this year, and will add 1,000 new energy cargo vehicles.
Wuhan is the latest city to offer additional support for the purchase of NEVs at a time when this year's Covid outbreak has hit the auto supply chain as well as consumption.
Yesterday, Beijing launched a new program to encourage residents to buy NEVs when they trade in their vehicles during the year.
For individual vehicle owners who scrap or transfer the passenger cars that they have held for more than one year and buy a NEV, the Beijing government will provide a subsidy of up to RMB 10,000, valid from June 1 to December 31, according to the program.
Last week, the Shanghai government introduced a similar policy, but it was limited to pure electric vehicles, EREVs and PHEVs were excluded.
From June 1 to December 31, individual users who scrap or transfer their cars owned in Shanghai and buy pure EVs locally will receive a subsidy of RMB 10,000, according to an announcement made by the Shanghai government on June 17.
