China's NEV sales in December were 531,000 units, up 113.9 percent year-on-year and 11.1 percent from November, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Makers (CAAM).

New energy passenger vehicle sales in December were 498,000 units, up 120.6 percent year-on-year. Among them, 416,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold, up 120.5 percent year-on-year, while 82,000 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were sold, up 121.6 percent year-on-year.

January-December sales of NEVs in China were 3.521 million units, up 157.5 percent year-on-year, the data showed.

January-December sales of new energy passenger vehicles were 3.334 million, up 167.5 percent year-on-year. Among them, BEV sales were 2.734 million, up 173.5 percent year-on-year, and PHEV sales were 600,000, up 143.2 percent year-on-year.

It is worth noting that the CAAM does not specify, but as long as the cars were sold to dealers, they can be counted as sales, so the figure is the wholesale volume.

China's NEV production in December was 518,000 units, up 120 percent year-on-year. From January to December, China's NEV production was 3.545 million units, up 159.5 percent year-on-year.

Exports of NEVs from China were 18,000 units in December, up 20.1 percent year-on-year and down 51.1 percent from November.

Sales of all vehicles in China were 2.786 million units in December, down 1.6 percent year-on-year and up 10.5 percent from November. A total of 26.275 million vehicles were sold in China from January to December, up 3.8 percent year-on-year.

Production of all vehicles in China in December was 2.907 million units, up 2.4 percent year-on-year and up 12.5 percent from November. A total of 26.082 million units were produced in China in January-December, up 3.4 percent year-on-year.

The CAAM said that both production and sales of cars in China increased in 2021 compared to 2020, ending three consecutive years of decline since 2018.

Among them, NEVs became the biggest highlight, with annual sales exceeding 3.5 million units and market share rising to 13.4 percent, further demonstrating that the NEV market has shifted from -driven to market-driven, the CAAM said.

China's auto exports have repeatedly set new historical records since April, with annual exports exceeding 2 million units for the first time, the CAAM noted.

Local brands' market share in China's auto market has exceeded 44 percent, nearing its best-ever level, the CAAM said.
