Looking at July's insurance registrations, Tesla's sales in China were down, while Nio, Xpeng Motors, and Li Auto all saw year-over-year sales increases of more than 100 percent, according to a report released by Essence Securities on August 22.
Tesla's insurance registrations in July were 8,998 units, down 21.5 percent year-over-year and 68.4 percent from June. Insurance registrations for Model 3 were 6,601 units and 2,397 units for Model Y.
Tesla China's wholesale sales in July were 33,000 units and exports were 24,000, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Giga Shanghai's capacity will be put on the local market in the second half of the third quarter, meaning sales are expected to pick up by then.
Insurance registrations for the Model 3 and Model Y were 44.6 percent and 50.3 percent, respectively, in cities where car purchases are restricted, and 93.7 percent and 95.8 percent, respectively, in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities combined.
The five cities with the highest insurance registrations for the Model 3 in July were Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Beijing and Guangzhou, with a combined share of 41.8 percent.
The five cities with the highest insurance registrations for Model Y in July were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu, accounting for a total of 48.2 percent.
Nio registered 8,052 units in July, up 124.7 percent year-over-year and up 3.5 percent from June. 3,625, 2,655 and 1,772 units of ES6, EC6 and ES8 were registered in July, respectively.
The insurance registrations of Nio ES6 in July in cities that do not restrict car travel but restrict car purchase, cities that restrict car purchase and cities that restrict car travel accounted for 30.3 percent, 46.5 percent and 23.2 percent, respectively.
The five cities with the highest share of Nio ES6 insurance registrations in July were Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shenzhen, with a combined share of 46.4 percent.
Xpeng's insurance registrations in July were 7,732 units, up 205.4 percent year-over-year and up 16.5 percent from June.
Xpeng P7's insurance registrations reached 6,098 units, up 253.9 percent year-over-year and 25.8 percent from June. G3's insurance registrations reached 1,634 units, up 102.0 percent year-over-year and down 8.9 percent from June.
The insurance registrations of Xpeng P7 were 31.1 percent, 50.5 percent and 18.4 percent in cities that do not restrict car trips but restrict car purchases, cities that restrict car purchases and cities that restrict car trips, respectively.
The five cities with the highest share of insurance registrations for Xpeng P7 in July were Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, with a combined share of 46.8 percent.
Li ONE's insurance registrations in July were 8,823 units, up 250.7 percent year-over-year and up 12.7 percent from June.
Li ONE's insurance registrations accounted for 36.2 percent, 33.8 percent and 30.0 percent in cities that do not restrict car travel but restrict car purchase, cities that restrict car purchase and cities that restrict car travel, respectively, with the percentage of cities that do not restrict car travel but restrict car purchase exceeding that of cities that restrict car purchase for the first time.
The five cities with the highest share of insurance registrations for Li ONE in July were Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu, with a combined share of 30.9 percent.
Neta Automobile, Leap Motor and WM Motor registered 6,253, 4,361 and 4,141 vehicles respectively in July, up 507.7 percent, 620.8 percent and 213.2 percent year-over-year, respectively.
