An agreement signed by China and France will take effect on August 17, when the two countries recognize each other's residents' driving licenses, the Traffic Administration Bureau of China said in an announcement Monday.
Under the agreement, residents of one country with a driving license can drive directly in the other country's territory or receive a license without taking a test.
Chinese residents who have been in France for no more than one year can drive directly with a Chinese driving license and a translation.
French residents who have been in China for less than one year can obtain a temporary driving permit without a medical examination or test with a French driving license and a translation.
The driving permits mutually recognized by the two countries cover medium-sized buses, large trucks, small cars and motorcycles.
Residents of the other country who have been in the other country for more than one year can obtain a driving license without a test by presenting their national driving license and a translation, as well as their passport, visa or residence permit.
The license can be issued without a test for small cars and motorcycles.
While working or studying in France, Chinese students can drive the corresponding vehicle without test with their Chinese driving license and translation.
French students working or studying in China can obtain a Chinese driving license for the corresponding vehicle without a test with their French driving license.
China already recognizes the driving licenses of each other's residents with the UAE and Belgium, and with Serbia to obtain each other's driving licenses.
