BYD maintained its position as China's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in March, while Tesla slipped one spot in retail sales rankings compared to February.
BYD's passenger NEV retail sales in China stood at 194,131 units in March. This represented a 33.1% year-on-year decrease but a 118.9% month-on-month surge, according to rankings released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Friday.
The company continued to rank first with a 22.8% share in March, up from 19.1% in February, expanding its lead over second-placed Geely Auto.
Geely's NEV retail sales in March were 96,842 units, down 12.7% year-on-year but up 26.4% month-on-month.
Geely ranked second in China's NEV market with an 11.4% share. Changan Automobile followed in third place with an 8.0% share and 68,089 units sold.
Tesla's retail sales in China were 56,107 units in March. This was a 24.3% year-on-year decline but a 46.9% month-on-month increase.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked fourth in China's NEV market in March, capturing a 6.6% market share. It ranked third in February with an 8.2% share.
Li Auto ranked fifth in the NEV market with retail sales of 41,053 units. It captured a 4.8% share, achieving an 11.9% year-on-year growth.
Nio Inc ranked seventh with retail sales of 35,383 units. It captured a 4.2% share, achieving a 136.7% year-on-year growth.
In the January-March period, BYD's NEV retail sales were 377,004 units. This was a 45.8% year-on-year decline, ranking first with a 19.8% share.
