Tesla China recorded significant growth in its March wholesale volume as the US electric vehicle (EV) maker extended its rebound in the world's largest auto market.

The company's wholesale volume reached 85,670 cars in March, which includes vehicles sold domestically in China and those exported to overseas markets.

The data, released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), represents an 8.68% increase from the 78,828 cars reported in the same period last year.

Compared to the 58,599 cars in February, Tesla China's March wholesale volume achieved a month-on-month surge of 46.20%.

The US EV maker's specific deliveries in China and export figures from its Shanghai factory for March are expected to be detailed by the CPCA later this month.

China's total wholesale sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in March are estimated at 1.12 million units, flat from the same period last year while up 55% from February, according to the CPCA.

The beginning of the year is typically a seasonal slow period for the Chinese auto market, while the end of the year usually sees an upward pulse in sales.

For the first quarter, Tesla China's total wholesale volume reached 213,398 cars, representing a 23.53% increase from a year earlier.

This performance builds on a sharp rebound in Tesla's retail sales in China in February, a time when the broader Chinese battery electric vehicle market experienced a widespread contraction.

Tesla captured a 13.74% share of China's battery electric vehicle market in February, the highest market share level recorded since April 2024.

Despite the domestic sales rebound in February, exports from Tesla's Shanghai factory slowed to 20,393 cars that month, dropping by about 60% from January.

Tesla said it has no plans to introduce a cheaper version of the Model 3 to the Chinese market, nor has it built a production line for the model at Giga Shanghai.
