Tesla celebrated the 10th anniversary of the launch of its Model 3 electric sedan, as the vehicle's sales span the globe.
The US EV pioneer said Wednesday on Weibo that the Model 3 was officially launched 10 years ago today, opening a new chapter in pure electric mobility.
Now, global sales of the Model 3 have exceeded three million units, and it's the pure electric mid-size sedan with the highest user satisfaction in China, Tesla said.
As the company's earliest mass-market pure electric model, the sedan was initially pitched on offering a more accessible retail price than Tesla's earlier Model S and Model X.
Riding on this more attractive pricing strategy, the sedan has dominated global EV sales charts over the past few years.
Notably, Tesla announced the discontinuation of the Model S and Model X in late January to make room for the manufacturing of its Optimus robots.
As its manufacturing system gradually stabilized, Tesla began producing the Model 3 in China after its Shanghai factory was completed in late 2019. Deliveries of the model in China started in January 2020.
The electric sedan sold 200,361 units in China in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 13.33%, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Exports of the Model 3 produced at Giga Shanghai stood at 112,377 units in 2025, down 38.65% year-on-year.
Despite its commercial success, the model is facing an increasing number of competitors in China, the world's largest EV market.
One of them is Xiaomi's SU7. The electric sedan was initially launched on March 28, 2024, and received a facelift last month.
The starting price of the new-generation SU7's Standard version is set at 219,900 yuan ($31,980), which is 15,600 yuan lower than the current starting price of the Tesla Model 3.
Besides the SU7, EV startups including Nio and Xpeng, as well as a slew of legacy automakers, also have electric sedan products competing with the Model 3.
