Xiaomi delivered about 5,000 units of its new-generation SU7 electric sedan in the first full week after its launch, as it prepared production in advance to capitalize on early consumer enthusiasm.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder, chairman, and CEO, said in a Weibo post published on Sunday that 4,000 to 5,000 new SU7 sedans were delivered in the first week.

As for whether the figure can surpass 5,000, it will be known tonight, as today is the last day of the week, Lei added in the comments section of his Weibo post.

The highly anticipated upgraded electric sedan began its first batch of deliveries on March 23, and Lei previously announced that Xiaomi is committed to improving the delivery experience so buyers can get their cars as early as possible.

Reports earlier this month suggested that production of Xiaomi's new SU7 could reach 16,000 units in March. To meet strong consumer demand, the company started production preparations two months in advance.

The starting price for the standard version of the new SU7 is set at 219,900 yuan ($31,820), which is 15,600 yuan lower than the current starting price of Tesla's Model 3.

The Beijing-based tech giant officially launched the updated sedan on March 19 and secured over 15,000 locked-in orders within the first 34 minutes of the release.

As of March 23, locked-in orders for the new-generation electric sedan had exceeded 30,000 units, with the entry-level standard version proving to be the most popular configuration choice among consumers.

The upgraded sedan features an assisted driving system powered by the new XLA cognitive large language model as standard across the lineup. This upgrade marks the first time Xiaomi has integrated assisted driving with embodied robot tasks.

The battery system has also seen significant upgrades, and all models are equipped with a silicon carbide high-voltage platform. The Pro version features a 96.3-kWh battery pack, boosting its range to 902 kilometers.

Lei said that the new generation model features over 100 significant hardware and software upgrades, which increased the vehicle's material costs by about 20,000 yuan.

The modest price hike sparked investor concerns that Xiaomi's profit margins would be squeezed, leading to a significant 8.59% drop in its Hong Kong-listed shares the day after the updated sedan was launched.

While advancing new car deliveries, Xiaomi is also accelerating its expansion in the motor sport sector, officially signing title sponsorship agreements with three top-tier racing events in China.

Xiaomi is relying on this updated SU7 sedan and the YU7 SUV to boost sales, aiming to achieve its ambitious 2026 sales target set at 550,000 vehicles.

Xiaomi EV delivered 20,414 cars in February, with the YU7 SUV contributing nearly 98% of total deliveries.
