Nio Inc has opened its first store in Costa Rica, officially kicking off its Latin American expansion.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker opened its first local Nio House in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose on March 26 local time, marking its first store in the Latin American region.
The new showroom was built in partnership with Horizontes Cielo Azul, which serves as the company's national general distributor in the Central American country.
Notably, this is Nio's first overseas store to showcase all three of its auto brands — Nio, Onvo, and Firefly — making Costa Rica the company's first overseas market entered with a three-brand strategy.
Located at Combai Mercado Urbano in the Escazu canton, an urban lifestyle landmark, the store serves as a comprehensive experience space to showcase its smart EVs.
Local consumers can now experience and purchase multiple models from Nio's three brands, with a lineup including the Nio ET5 Touring, EL6, EL8, Onvo L60, and Firefly. The EL6 and EL8 correspond to the ES6 and ES8 in the Chinese market, respectively.
Additionally, the Onvo L90 electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) will begin pre-sales during the major annual local auto show EXPOMOVIL on April 16.
Costa Rica's EV market has developed rapidly in recent years, and the demand for high-quality smart EVs continues to climb, providing Nio with huge growth potential, the company said in a statement on Sunday.
Horizontes Cielo Azul is Costa Rica's largest EV dealer, and it has successful experience in operating Chinese brands from scratch to the number one market share in the local market, the statement noted.
Nio has expanded its global footprint under the national general distributor model over the past few years, as it abandons the asset-heavy direct sales model used in its early days of entering international markets.
Earlier this month, CnEVPost exclusively reported that Nio was preparing for major adjustments to its European operations, potentially phasing its remaining direct-sales markets toward a more asset-light operating approach.
Nio officially entered the international market in October 2021, with its first stop in Norway, and subsequently expanded to Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, all using a direct sales model.
Earlier this week, Firefly was officially launched in Thailand, marking Nio Inc's latest effort to expand its overseas markets.
