Tesla said its Model Y has been the world's best-selling passenger car for three consecutive years, with cumulative global sales exceeding 4 million units.

The SUV (sport utility vehicle) has beaten all fossil-fuel, pure electric, and hybrid models over the past three years, Tesla said Wednesday on its Chinese social media accounts, citing data from market research firms including JATO Dynamics, Statista, and Focus2Move.

For the full year of 2025, Tesla produced 1,654,667 vehicles and delivered 1,636,129 vehicles globally, according to data released by the US electric vehicle maker.

Giga Shanghai delivered 851,732 vehicles in 2025, contributing 52% of Tesla's global deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The announcement of the Model Y's global milestone comes as Tesla experiences a significant sales rebound in the Chinese market. In February, Tesla's retail sales in China jumped 42.68% year-on-year to 38,206 units.

This performance stands in stark contrast to China's overall sluggish auto market. It propelled Tesla's share of the Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) market to 13.74%, the highest level since April 2024.

The Model Y drove this sales recovery. The model's retail sales in China surged 215.84% year-on-year to 25,286 units in February, up 50.11% from January.

However, Tesla is facing mounting pressure from domestic rivals. In January, the Model Y lost the title of China's best-selling EV to Xiaomi's YU7 SUV.

For the full year of 2025, retail sales of the Model Y in China stood at 425,337 units, down 34.44% year-on-year. Despite this, it still accounted for 67.98% of Tesla's annual sales in the country.

Including exports, wholesale sales of the China-made Model Y reached 538,994 units in 2025, a year-on-year decline of 3.18%.
